This fire screen is in the Aesthetic Movement style.
It is in turned ebonised mahogany with incised – albeit faded, gilded decoration and a beautiful centre panel of later pierced brass in the shape of clover leaf.
The wooden structure of the screen is very elegant with its attractive handle, finials and reeded columns with button sconces. The columns rests on a turned stretcher base terminating in incised – albeit faded gilded decorations feet.
The fire screen is a fine example of the Victorian period during a time when the Aestehtic Movement and Art Nouveau, whose roots were in the reaction to the Industrial Revolution in England in the middle of the 19th century, are the two major stylistic developments of this Movement’s philosophy.
