This is a beautiful centre table large bowl with the blue on white Tokio pattern by Adams of Tunstall, North Staffordshire. The large bowl has the Tokio pattern around outside of the bowl with three different themes and an inside pattern again with three different themes. It has a small pagoda symbol right in the centre of the bowl.
All themes are beautifully executed and exude the gentleness of the far east.
The Adams family descends from a family of that name owning lands in Tunstall as far back as 1299. Members of the family were Potters as early as 1447. They rose to eminence in the trade in the eighteenth century as Master Potters in Burslem and other parts of the Potteries, working constantly side by side with reknown names such as Wedgwoods. Warburtons, Woods and Mayers. They were pioneers of the trade in North Staffordshire.
The bowl has the Adams trade mark printed at the bottom which was extensively used from 1896. The mark with the registration number like in this case 684663 was first registered in 1920 and this is why we are certain of the date of this item.
I can describe this piece as an elegant large bowl which would grace elegant environments and would provide a finishing touch to important interiors. It has been used as a prop for the photographs of some of our furniture and you are invited to look at our online shop to appreciate the elegance of this piece.
Condition report: There is a mark inside at the bottom of the bowl like if before glazing, a small splash of water marked the unglazed ware. There is some crazing,
for example at the bottom where the Adams mark is and a small chip round the rim at the foot of the bowl. All of the above are a testimony of the age and use of this very fine old piece of antique furniture which is full of character.
