This is an impressive and beautiful oil painting on canvas in the East Anglian School indistinctly signed. We have worked hard to identify the signature which reads J Matt or J Watt. It is signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner.
The painting which is encased in a richly decorated gilt wood and gesso frame, depicts a classical rural scene - perhaps in Suffolk, England. The painting is very poetic in its classical style. The landscape is infused with a calm light and open skies. It is a lovely example of the 19th Century British landscape painting influenced by the works of important painters like John Moore, Edward and Thomas Smythe, who lived and worked in Suffolk.
The painting is framed and glazed and bear the signature of the artist
Frame: H: 64 cm ( 25 inches) x W: 74 cm ( 29 inches)
Canvas: H: 39 cm ( 15 ¼ inches) X W: 49 cm ( 19 ¼ inches)
Condition: The painting is in good condition considering its age and the frame has minor chips due to handling.
